Ferrohydrodynamics

Why Ferrofluids?

Ferrofluids are a special type of fluid that respond dramatically to magnetic fields. Originally developed by NASA for use in fuel pumps in their rockets, these fluids have found their way into a large variety of consumer and industrial devices.

What have I done?

I completed my PhD thesis in December 2018. The work focused on understanding the dynamics of ferrofluids when flowing along a current carrying wire. In this geometry, non-standard hydrodynamic phenomena have been observed. My task was to find reduced order models which explained the experimental results.
