Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

 

What am I doing?

I am currently developing continuum-limit physics-based mathematical models for Li-S batteries. I am also working to add the current suite of models in the literature to the PyBaMM framework. This is part of my larger goal to increase rigour and open-access science into the Li-S modelling community.

Why Li-S Batteries?

Li-S batteries are theoretically superior to traditional Li-ion batteries in several ways. For example, Li-S are predicted to have a higher specific energy capacity and lower environmental cost. However, the technology needs to be developed further to bring the theoretical superiority to a practical one.

Why models?

Developing accurate, physics-based mathematical models will help develop the Li-S battery technology in many ways.

First, each model represents a hypothesis of the underlying mechanisms of the battery. Validating and falsifying these models translates to validation and falsification of the hypothesised mechanisms. Once the mechanisms are better understood, experimental development can be focused more efficiently.

Second, accurate models will allow battery management systems to operate under a host of seen and unseen conditions. This will make the practical use of Li-S far more efficient and safe.

Third, computer simulations are far cheaper and faster than experiments. Utilising new materials and constructions, models can quickly assess the net benefits or costs of new Li-S batteries. Although models will never replace experiments, this allows experimenters to focus on truly new advances.
